The genesis of Platform Presents was this poetry evening in December 2016. A group of talented actors – Vanessa Kirby, John Standing, Danny Kirrane, Brett Anderson, Mariah Gale and many more– read poems to a captive audience. The live experience was visceral and powerful. With the desire to take an audience on a story led experience, Platform Presents decided to develop a programme combining poetry evenings and play readings.

MEET THE ANTHOLOGY

Wavell in the last years of his life became President of the Royal Society of Literature and of Kipling, Browning, Poetry and Virgil Societies. First published in 1944, during the darkest days of the war, A.P Wavell’s great anthology of English poetry – enhanced by his own introduction and annotations has encouraged and delighted many thousands of readers. The book is divided into sections: Music, Mystery and Magic; Good Fighting; Love And All That; The Call Of The Wild; Conversation Pieces; The Lighter Side; Hymns Of Hate; Ragbag; Last Post and lastly: Outside The Gate. Each has a briefing by Wavell on the theme and poems selected which also adds to our understanding of the man.

It has remained in print every since, proving beyond doubt that, whatever the fashion of the day, poetry can fulfil its ancient function, finding its way to the hearts of the many, not only to the minds of the few.

As part of Desert Island Discs, Judi Dench asked if she could take along an audio machine, with a recording of her daughter reading ‘Other Men’s Flowers.’
